Scientists worry Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano could soon send boulders and ash shooting out of its summit crater.
Because of the danger, the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park closed on Thursday night.
Right now, active eruptions from fissures have stopped. But earthquakes continue, and more outbreaks are expected.
KRON4 spoke with a family in Hawaii with Bay Area roots, who likely lost everything in the lava.
The lava has destroyed a total of 36 homes. One of them belonged to a man from Brentwood.
It was his dream house. And he and his wife talked to KRON4 by FaceTime from Hawaii and say they just moved in a few weeks ago.
“More than anything that I think was in that home is our life, and our children’s dreams to come here,” Marci Nail said.
For Marci and David Nail, it was a labor of love building their dream house in Leilani Estates that started 10 years ago.
David grew up in Brentwood.
This was their home, the place for the last chapter of their lives, constructing it all themselves. They just moved there in March.
“It looks like the house blew up, and it looks like lava came out of the center of the living room,” David said
Last week, after feeling the earthquakes and seeing smoke in the sky, they packed up a few things and left. But figured they would be back.
A week later, they can’t even get close enough to assess the damage. With the road blocked, they have no idea if anything is left.
The uncertainty can be overwhelming.
“It was devastating,” David said.
One picture from the sky shows the situation is not good at all.
“The top of the roof is completely caved in, burned, so it’s what’s laying underneath that roof whether or not if there is anything structurally that maybe held it up or something we could crawl in and see if we can shift through some stuff,” Marci said.
But they do believe everything is gone, including family heirlooms.
“Unfortunately, they are not going to be passed on now because I am sure they are all gone,” Marci said.
Their dream home, they barely got to enjoy, is now burned by lava.
But it does not mean they are destroyed.
“Because our souls and love are in those walls, built crushed or rolled over, they are still there and they will always be there,” Marci said.
The family does have lava insurance.
But they can’t start the process of filing paperwork until they can get to their house and see the damage.
And when that will be is uncertain.
