FAIRFIELD (KRON) — A 42-year-old man suffered serious injuries in a fireworks explosion that prompted the evacuation of nearby residents on Wednesday evening, according to Fairfield police.

Investigators say Anthony Stewart was assembling fireworks inside his garage at his home in the 1700 block of Catlin Drive when the explosion occurred.

Stewart was taken to a Sacramento-area burn unit with life-threatening burns across his body, police said. An update on his condition was not immediately available Thursday morning.

A large number of undetonated devices were found in the garage, prompting police to evacuate nearby homes. The Yolo County bomb squad and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were called to the scene to assist as part of protocol, officers said.

Bomb technicians were expected to work through the night to remove the explosives.

Neighbors immediately surrounding the victim’s home were relocated for the night with the assistance of the American Red Cross, according to police.
