Looking to buy a political ad on Facebook?
You’ll now have to prove your ties to the United States.
Those wishing to buy ads will also have to hand over their social security number, provide a picture of a government-issued ID, and give Facebook a U.S. mailing address.
The information will be reviewed and then Facebook will mail a letter with an authorization code to the address provided.
Facebook said it will delete the information once the verification process is complete.
Using the site for personal use doesn’t require users to provide that kind of private data.
The new policy is part of Facebook’s mission to increase transparency after Russian-linked Facebook ads targeted Americans during the 2016 Presidential election.
