CHARLESTON, S.C. (KRON/WCBD/AP) – An F-16 fighter jet and a small private plane collided in mid-air near Charleston, South Carolina on Tuesday, the Federal Aviation Administration said.
An Air Force official says the pilot of the crashed F-16 fighter jet has been taken to a base in South Carolina for observation. But officials did not provide details about the condition of the pilot.
A spokeswoman at Air Force headquarters at the Pentagon says the F-16 originated from Shaw Air Force Base in South Carolina and that the pilot of the jet ejected safely.
The FAA said in a statement that the collision involved a Cessna and happened around 11 a.m. about 11 miles north of Charleston.
The military aircraft reportedly struck the side of the smaller aircraft.
It was not immediately known how many people were on board the Cessna or if any of them survived.
Shaw Air Force Base said in a statement that a team of investigators would look into the cause of the crash.
