SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — Residents in the “Leaning tower of San Francisco” or the Millennium Tower are concerned, and bringing in experts to understand why the high-rise tower is sinking.

KRON4’s Terisa Estacio reports that the Millennium Tower has sunk 16 inches, and an expert will drill 260 feet below the 58 level tower to understand the tower’s complications.

Homeowners within the high-rise are concerned if the city of San Francisco will red-tag and shutdown the building.

Pat Shires, an engineer, was brought on by the Homeowners Association and measure, analyze and track the settlement of the giant building.

According to resident Jerry Dodson, his life has been turned upside down after he spotted cracks on the sidewalk near the building. Dodson’s main concern are his fellow neighbors, and those who have invested so much into the luxury tower.

Engineers said, the elevators inside the high-rise are laser aligned. If conditions worsen, the elevators could potentially stop working.

City officials continue to look at all the projects developed on the tower. However, developers for the tower have blamed tilting and sinking on the new Transbay Transit Center being built nearby. Developers said, the construction is undermining the tower’s foundation.

City officials said, a fix could run into millions of dollars.
