ORINDA (KRON) — While the Bay Area is celebrating the Splash Brothers 2014-15 NBA title, it looks like one former Golden State Warriors star is doing some splashing of his own.
According to East Bay Municipal Utility District records, the 40-year-old Orinda resident was listed as one of over 1,000 customers in violation of the agency’s water use ordinance which went into effect as a response to the state’s devastating drought.
According to EBMUD, Foyle was found to be using about 3,000 gallons of water per day, over a 60-day billing cycle.
But Foyle, pales in comparison to several other high-profile customers that consumed more than the limit allowed by the Excessive Water Use Ordinance.
Former Safeway Chief Executive Officer Steven Burd is racked up a bill for using more than 435,300 gallons of water over 60 days.
Kumarakulasingam Suriyakumar, of Diablo, was the highest user with over 9,000 gallons per day, according to EBMUD’s records.
Being in violation of EBMUD’s excessive use ordinance is a misdemeanor and subject to a $2 penalty for each unit over the 80 unit threshold, according to EBMUD. The fines may seem inconsequential considering the presumed high household incomes for many of these violators.
But it’s not about being punitive, EBMUD officials previously said.
“The message we’re trying to communicate is focused on water conservation, we’re not trying to be punitive,” said EBMUD spokeswoman Abby Figueroa.
In a previous report, William L. “Billy” Beane, Executive Vice President of Baseball Operations with the Oakland A’s, was listed as using more 359,000 gallons of water during a two month period over the summer, or nearly 6,000 gallons per day.
“Three irrigation leaks were recently discovered and corrected. We were more than displeased and embarrassed by the usage,” Beane said in a statement released through the A’s.
