(KRON) — The federal judge who presided over an appeal for Mexican drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman was killed outside of his home in Mexico, according to the New York Daily News.
Judge Vicente Bermudez Zacarias, 37, was shot in the head at close range in front of his Metepec home on Monday.
Bermudez presided over appeals from several accused drug lords and jailed the leader of Sinaloa Cartel.
“El Chapo” is currently in a federal prison on the outskirts of Ciudad Juarez, which borders El Paso, Texas. He is under special surveillance due to his two previous prison breaks through elaborately constructed tunnels.
Guzman could be extradited to the United States by early next year.
