MARTINEZ (KRON) — Hot weather and high school football practice can be a major problem for young athletes.

But one East Bay school is keeping their players cool during the heatwave. Football practice at Alhabra High School in Martinez starts a little later than other schools because of hot days like Wednesday, with temperatures reaching 95-degrees.

The Bulldogs athletic trainer Amanda Hawkes talks about what the coaches and training staff do to keep players cool during practice.

“So, they’re not practicing in the hot sun…designated water breaks throughout the day,” Hawkes said.

She said there are additional training assistants on the field to help spot any players having heat-related problems.
