SAN LEANDRO (KRON) — A man has been arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence after killing a man in a fatal accident in San Leandro on Tuesday night, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Ulysses Wortham, 62, allegedly struck and killed 28-year-old Pavan Mishra who had pulled over due to a flat tire on southbound Interstate 880 around 8:28 a.m., CHP said.

Wortham, of San Francisco, was driving his 2002 Lexus SUV when he drifted into the right shoulder of I-880.

He struck Mishra, of Hayward, who was fixing a flat tire on his 1998 Honda. The Lexus overturned and the impact forced the Honda into traffic.

Mishra was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the CHP.

Investigators later determined that Wortham was allegedly driving while under the influence of alcohol when the crash occurred, CHP officials said.

He was treated for a head contusion and back pain before being booked at Santa Rita Jail in Dublin, where he is being held in lieu of $175,000 bail. He’s scheduled to be arraigned in Alameda County Superior Court in Hayward on Thursday.

All southbound lanes of the freeway were closed until 10:47 p.m. while the CHP investigated the crash.
