Murder charges have been filed against the woman responsible for a fatal DUI crash in Walnut Creek last week that claimed the lives of a father and his 8-month-old daughter.

According to the Walnut Creek Police Department, 35-year-old Jessica Martin has been charged with two counts of murder, one count of DUI of alcohol causing great bodily injury, and one count of driving with a .08% or great blood alcohol content causing injury.

She remains in custody; her bail is set at $2.1 million.

The 4-car crash happened Thursday, Oct. 25 around 6:30 p.m. on S. Broadway in Walnut Creek.

Police say Martin was driving her car southbound on S. Broadway when she collided into the three other cars that were traveling northbound on the same road.

Officers suspected Martin was driving under the influence of alcohol and she was arrested at the hospital for felony DUI and vehicular manslaughter.

One of the victims, Hector Garza, died at the scene. His daughter, 8-month-old Camilla, was taken to the hospital with major injuries.

It was announced on Tuesday that Camilla had passed away from her injuries at Children’s Hospital in Oakland.

The Garza family released the following statement:

“The Garza family is struggling to comprehend how this tragic incident has taken the lives of two beloved individuals. Kirsten Garza is mourning the death of her husband, Hector and their 8-month-old daughter, Camilla who passed away last night. Kirsten is surrounded by family and friends who are providing her with love and support during this profoundly painful time.  Kristen and her family are asking everyone to please allow them to grieve for their losses and respect their privacy,” said a Garza family spokesman, attorney Alan Van Gelder.

Four others, including Martin, were injured.

Investigators are trying to determine where Martin was coming from before the crash and is asking anyone with information to come forward.
