SONOMA COUNTY (BCN) – A man is in custody in Petaluma after he was found by police to be extremely intoxicated and operating a vehicle Monday morning, according to

police.

Police said at 10:43 a.m. dispatchers multiple reports of a driver of a purple Ford sedan driving erratically on U.S. highway 101 in Petaluma.

The driver, John Haner of Vallejo, was initially reported to CHP when he was driving southbound on Cotati Grande and nearly collided with four vehicles before exiting the freeway onto Old Redwood Highway in North Petaluma, according to police.

Police said a witness observed Haner nearly driving off the roadway as he attempted to take the off ramp, before stopping at the traffic light for four cycles before finally driving again.

According to police another caller said he witnessed Haner driving from Petaluma Boulevard North making a left turn onto Corona Road, nearly colliding with a telephone pole.

Police said Haner had little control over the vehicle and was swerving badly before being stopped by a motor officer on Corona Road near Adobe Road.

Once contacted, police said Haner showed extreme signs of intoxication including slurred speech, the inability to answer any questions, smelling of alcohol and nearly falling down when attempting to stand.

Haner was placed under arrest for driving while under the influence, and taken to a hospital where an evidentiary blood draw was performed, according to police.

Haner was booked into the Sonoma County Jail and is being held on $5,000 bail.
