DANVILLE (KRON) — An overturned truck had several lanes of Interstate Highway 680 in Danville closed Monday morning, California Highway Patrol officers said.

The overturn was reported at 3:24 a.m. on the southbound side of the highway, at El Pintado Road.

A 2 axle box truck traveling southbound drifted into shoulder lanes striking an abandoned van, then hitting a highway pole.

The truck wrapped around the pole, spilling packages all over the highway.

The driver of the truck was taken to a nearby hospital in Walnut Creek where he died.

It remains unclear why the driver allowed his box truck to veer into the right shoulder, CHP said.

The company that owns the truck is in the process of loading all packages into another truck for transport.

CHP officers issued a Sig-alert at 3:40 a.m. when they closed all but the left lane. The second lane was reopened just before 4 a.m.

At this time, traffic on I-680 southbound is still backed up into Walnut Creek and using an alternate route is suggested.

The right lane is also still closed at El Pintado Road for the package collection and clean up.

Alcohol and drugs do not appear to be a factor in this collision, according to CHP.

Ninety-five percent of the packages have been recovered.
