SONOMA COUNTY (BCN) — The driver of a GEO Metro was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries after a fiery crash west of Windsor Monday morning, a California Highway Patrol officer said.

The male driver was speeding north on Eastside Road south of Riverfront Regional Park around 9 a.m., CHP Officer Jon Sloat said.

The driver lost control and ran off the roadway, then struck a tree and overturned in a ditch, Sloat said. The Geo Metro caught on fire, and several passersby, including a Sonoma County road crew, used up two fire

extinguishers to try to put out the fire.

A CHP officer tried to put out the fire and reach the driver, and the Windsor Fire Protection District extinguished the fire that had engulfed the interior, Sloat said.

The driver was removed and was taken to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital before he was transferred to the UC Davis Medical Center, Sloat said.

The CHP is still trying to identify the driver.
