SANTA ROSA (BCN) — Santa Rosa police arrested a man Sunday who allegedly wanted to use his former girlfriend’s home to process marijuana, a police sergeant said.

Gilberto Ruiz Avendano, 31, went to a residence on Acacia Lane in northeast Santa Rosa to try to renew his relationship with the mother of his children, Sgt. Terry Anderson said.

During an argument about the marijuana and their relationship, Avendano pointed a weapon that looked like an assault rifle at the woman’s chest and threatened to kill her, Anderson said. When Avendano fired a shot into the ceiling, the woman left with the children and Avendano remained inside, Anderson said.

When the woman returned at 10:30 p.m. with several other people to convince Avendano to leave, Avendano said he would be waiting if police arrived. The woman said she saw a large amount of marijuana and Avendano appeared to be intoxicated, Anderson said.

The police department’s SWAT team, Tactical Support Team, and Hostage Negotiating Team arrived and spoke with Avendano.

He was unarmed when he was arrested after he ran from the rear of the residence, Anderson said.

Police searched the Acacia Lane residence and another residence believed to be Avendano’s and found evidence that corroborated the woman’s statement and linked Avendano to the incident, Anderson said.

Avendano was booked in the Sonoma County Jail under $250,000 bail on suspicion of child endangerment, threats, assault with a deadly weapon and burglary, Anderson said.
