Newly-released body camera video shows what happened when Pittsburg police shot and killed a man this week.

The man has been identified Friday as 37-year-old Salvador Morales of Pittsburg.

The deadly standoff with police started after he allegedly shot a family member and kidnapped his estranged wife and baby.

Some people might find the video upsetting. It was a deadly end to a 2-hour police standoff, with Pittsburg police shooting and killing Morales.

On the body cameras, an officer is heard talking to himself and others negotiating with Morales in Spanish.

Police provided three angles of the shooting, two from police body cameras and one from a patrol car.

But none show exactly when police shot him because of how they are positioned.

On Monday, the incident started when police say Morales held his wife and baby at gunpoint and shot a family member in the neck.

He then, according to police, forced his wife and baby into his car and drove to a house on West 10th Street.

That is where his wife ran away and took the baby to safety. Police say this is where Morales barricaded himself inside for hours.

Police say when Morales came out of the house, he did not listen to commands to put the gun down.

In one video, it looks like he is holding the gun to his head and tells officers he wants to go to his car.

They tell him to back off and then comes the bang of the less lethal round.

And seconds later come a series of gunshots.

The police investigation, so far, has determined officers fired one less-lethal round, Morales fired one round at officers, and officers returned fire with eight rounds.

The four officers involved are all members of the SWAT team and have years of experience.

Police said they released the video in an effort to be transparent and gain trust with the community.

The Contra Costa District Attorney now has the case and will determine if the officer’s actions were justified.
