SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — If the world is your oyster, let’s get shucking!
Believe it or not, nearly two billion oysters are slurped every year in the U.S. Whether it is imported or farmed, this little bivalve is a Bay Area favorite.
Some of the top spots if you’re an oyster lover–Hog Island at the Ferry Building, Waterbar on the Embarcadero, Swan’s Oyster Depo, or at Bar Crudo.
“I always recommend you don’t want to eat oysters any place that serves them,” Co-owner of Bar Crudo Tim Selvera said. “Just because you don’t know how long they’ve been sitting there.”
Fresh is a must for the Mullask. Some like it hot, and others want it in the raw.
Diners may want to wash their oysters down. At Hog Island, their oyster wine doesn’t actually contain oysters. But at Bar Crudo, their beer does.
And oyster as aphrodisiac?
“You know, you get the right atmosphere, some champagne – anything can happen,” Sselvera said.
It might be more fact than fiction, as researchers found oysters are rich in rare amino acids that trigger sex hormones.
