Dignitaries to attend memorial for fallen San Jose officer

SAN JOSE (KRON) — Federal, state and local dignitaries have announced that they plan to attend the memorial service for slain officer Michael Johnson.

The 14-year veteran was shot and killed by 57-year-old Scott Dunham on March 24.


38-year-old Johnson was responding to a call about a possibly suicidal man when he was killed by Dunham.

A member of Dunham’s family called police just before 7 p.m. that evening, telling the 9-1-1 dispatcher that Dunham was drunk, upset and had access to a gun.

Dunham allegedly fired an rifle from the balcony of his apartment in the 2600 block of Senter Road in east San Jose, killing Johnson.

Another officer killed Dunham during a gun battle.

Johnson was the 12th police officer killed while on duty since the San Jose Police Department was founded in 1849.

According to Governor Jerry Brown’s office, Johnson is survived by his parents, Katherine Decker and Daniel Johnson.

On Thursday, a motorcade will start in Los Gatos at 10 a.m. and head to the SAP Center for an 11 a.m. service scheduled to last until 1:30 p.m.SEE THE PROCESSION ROUTE HERE

A procession will follow to a private ceremony at Oak Hill Funeral Home & Memorial Park.

State Attorney General Kamala Harris will be in attendance and make remarks during the service, according to police.

San Jose police Chief Larry Esquivel will also speak at the memorial, as will Jamie Radnack, Johnson’s sister.

Other state officials attending include Rep. Mike Honda, Sen. Jim Beall and Assemblyman Kansen Chu, police said.

Local dignitaries scheduled to attend include the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors, San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo and City Council.

Representatives for U.S. Sens. Barbara Boxer and Dianne Feinstein will also be at the service.

Former San Jose mayors Ron Gonzales and Tom McEnery, retired San Jose police Chief Rob Davis and Laurie McNamara, widow of former chief Joseph McNamara will also attend.
