East Bay fire agencies are warning the public that fire season is now, and there are steps you can take to minimize the fire danger.

On Tuesday, KRON4 has tips on how to prepare for wildfires.

A meeting of the minds in the Oakland Hills on Tuesday is drawing attention to the fire potential as summer fast approaches.

“Fire season is upon us, and we need your help to keep our community safe,” said Vince Crudele, who supervises the Oakland Fire Prevention Bureau.

Fourteen fire and public safety departments make up the Hills Emergency Forum. It is a group created shortly after the Oakland Hills Fire in 1991 as a way to bring local agencies together to plan and prepare for disasters.

The Hills Emergency Forum gathered on Tuesday to advise the public to get ready for what could be a very active fire season.

“Clearing seasonal weeds, brush, combustible debris from your property, now and then, maintains your property in a safe, in a fire safe condition, reducing the threat of fire,” El Cerrito Battalion Fire Chief Dave Gibson said.

Crews up and down Skyline Boulevard are removing weeds and trimming the grass, which reduces the fire risk.

“What we have is an example of creating some defensible space down the slope here,” Crudele said.

Fire officials met at the scene of last year’s Grizzly Fire off Grizzly Peak Boulevard.

Some 200 firefighters responded to that fire, which burned about 20 acres of land.

The cause is still under investigation, but the Oakland Fire Department suspects arson.

If something like that happens again, fire agencies say be prepared to evacuate.
