SAN MATEO COUNTY (KRON)—Three people were detained Sunday morning in connection to a drug smuggling operation on the San Mateo County coast, according to a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokesman.

A U.S. Coast Guard crew spotted a boat at Ano Nuevo State Park on 1 New Years Creek Road in Pescadero.

Immigration and customs officials were notified and sent agents to investigate, spokesman James Schwab said.

A crew tracked the boat before it got to shore.

Customs agents and San Mateo County Sheriff’s deputies responded and detained three people. They were believed to be associated with the boat.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokesman James Schwab released a statement regarding the incident.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) received information from personnel with U.S. Coast Guard who were actively tracking a panga boat along the coast believed to be involved in maritime narcotics smuggling. Coast Guard personnel observed the boat as it landed at Ano Nuevo State Park. HSI special agents, along with officers with the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office, are onsite and have detained three individuals believed to be associated with the boat. The investigation is ongoing.
