Denver restaurant hires ex-cons to fill need for workers

When the economy does well, it can be difficult for some businesses to find enough employees.

One Colorado restaurant is solving that problem by taking a chance on some people who may need it the most.

Restaurateur Frank Bonnano looked at prisons and half-way houses for employees.

Bonnano says rising housing costs are pricing out restaurant workers who are no longer able to live in Denver.

Also, the construction and marijuana industries are hiring from the same pool. Meanwhile, the restaurant business is booming.

It’s a challenge that Bonnano says is providing unique opportunities to both his restaurant and people wanting a fresh start.

“Why not give them a chance?” Bonnano said. “When you’re looking for something, maybe you can satisfy the same goal of helping them get back in and get back on their feet and helping us to be successful.”

Bonnano’s solution could also be a way to operate under the same margin without raising prices for customers.
