Here is the full statement by the CHP:

On March 23, 2018, shortly before 9:30 AM, officers from the California Highway Patrol’s Redwood City office received a call of a multi-vehicle collision on US-101 southbound at the SR-85 southbound connector.

A blue Tesla was traveling southbound US-101 southbound when for unknown reasons the Tesla collided with the attenuator barrier dividing the SR-85 southbound connector and US-101 southbound lanes. The Tesla was struck by a white Mazda and consequently struck again by a gray Audi. The Tesla then caught fire. The driver sustained major injuries and later succumbed to his injuries at Stanford Hospital.

No other injuries were reported.  The connector lane to SR-85 southbound and the two left lanes of US-101 southbound were closed during the on-scene investigation and were re-opened at approximately 3:10 PM.

It is unknown if drugs or alcohol were a factor in this collision at this time.  If there are witnesses to this collision, please contact Officer Juan Garcia at (650) 369-6261.
