STOCKTON, Calif. (AP) — Prosecutors say a man pleaded guilty to a Stockton, California, bank robbery and gunbattle with police that ended in the death of a woman used as a human shield.

San Joaquin County District Attorney Tori Verber Salazer said Friday in a statement that Jaime Ramos agreed to spend life in prison for the death of Misty Holt-Singh.

The 41-year-old wife and mother was taken hostage in the 2014 robbery. She died in a spray of bullets fired by police that killed two other suspects. Another two women taken hostage survived their injuries.

Prosecutors say that they agreed not to seek a death sentence against Ramos.

A second man also pleaded guilty for his role driving the robbers to the bank.

Ramos’ attorney was not immediately available for comment.
