The town of San Anselmo has been getting a lot of rain and there is more in the forecast.

There has been so much rain that the County Council canceled their meeting on Tuesday night.

A creek in San Anselmo was hitting between eight and nine feet of water on Tuesday morning.

These levels worry officials because when the creek hits 11-feet, a siren will sound alerting people of possible flooding — 13-feet is when flooding is imminent.

The Director of Public Works, Sean Condry, says if it happens they will start evacuating people and closing off San Anselmo Avenue.

They do not want people to come into the area and watch the spectacle of the creek overflowing because it’s no safe.

“It is dangerous if it floods down here,” Condry said. “We’ll get up to four feet of water if you look at the floodgates here that we have it gets almost four feet high and if there’s four feet of water, there’s cars that have washed down this street. You know, so you’re not going to be able to hold onto your little kids or yourself barely. So you need to leave, that’s really what we want people to know if the flood horn sounds, go to safe ground.”

In addition, the floodgates are also warning signs to drivers entering San Anselmo Avenue.

When flooded, turn around. Don’t drown.

Many businesses in the downtown sector have sandbags ready when needed.

The town is also making more sandbags available at the tennis courts at Memorial park which is off of Sunny Hills Drive.
