Say goodbye to signing your name when you check out.
Credit card companies are collectively doing away with signatures at the checkout stand.
And while the reasoning makes sense to some, others say it could lead to more problems.
A Walnut Creek Target is one of several stores that will soon completely do away with requiring a signature when you pay for your goods.
Right now, purchases typically between $25 to $50 do not trigger signing to make a purchase.
But by the end of the month, Target plans to completely eliminate the need to your write out your name–ever.
Walmart has already done away with signatures.
Later this month, the big credit card companies such as American Express, Discover, MasterCard, and Visa will stop mandating signatures at check out.
A spokesperson from a merchant advisory group calls signatures obsolete and not necessary measures, given protective steps such as adding chips to credit cards.
There is a catch. Some say they are worried about small merchants like hairdressers getting short-changed, with people possibly forgetting to remember to add a tip as they sign off the charge.
But some people add they always give cash in those circumstances.
