Cows shot dead, calf stolen from Castro Valley ranch

CASTRO VALLEY (KRON) — The Alameda County sheriff’s office is looking for the assailant that walked away with a young calf from a Castro Valley ranch after fatally shooting its mother and two other cows.

The incident was reported at about 7 a.m. Saturday by rancher who discovered that three of his cows had been shot and killed and a calf had been stolen from his Eden Canyon Road ranch, sheriff’s Sgt. Ray Kelly said.

By shooting the calf’s mother, the calf wouldn’t run when the thief moved in to steal it, according to Kelly. The thief also cut off the ears of the dead cows, which contained their branded identifying tags.

“It’s a particularly heinous way to go about stealing the calf,” Kelly said. “It’s completely uncalled for.”

Kelly said that the assailant or assailants will likely try to sell the calf at a livestock sale for several hundred dollars.

The sheriff’s office is asking anyone with information to call (510) 667-3602 or a tip line at (510) 667-3622.
