BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — A correctional officer attacked by inmates at Kern Valley State Prison last April has died, according to statements from the California Correctional Peace Officers Association and the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.
In the alleged attack, Officer Armando Gallegos suffered injuries to his face, neck, and head, according to CCPOA.
On Sept. 14, Gallegos collapsed and became unresponsive. The cause of death is pending, but the peace officers association believes the death is due to injuries from the attack.
Back in April, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation officials sent a news release saying a dozen inmates attacked two officers in a dorm at one of the prison’s dayrooms just after 3:30 p.m.
Officials said the attackers continued to attack the two unidentified officers as other staff responded. The attackers were pepper sprayed and were eventually pulled away from the two officers.
One officer suffered a broken vertebrae in his back, a broken nose, a concussion and other injuries to his hand and face. Prison officials said he would not be able to work for “an extended period of time.”
The second officer suffered injuries to his hands and face and could return to work in a few days, according to officials.
Six inmates were treated at the prison for cuts and bruises.
