(KRON)—Congresswoman Barbara Lee expressed her sympathies to those who are mourning the death of former Cuban president Fidel Castro who died on Friday.

Castro was 90 years old. He was prime minister of Cuba from 1959 to 1976 and president from 1976 to 2008

“My deepest condolences to Fidel Castro’s family and the Cuban people during this time. While there are many disagreements between our countries, President Castro was a recognized world leader who was dedicated to the Cuban people,” Lee said in a statement.

“It is my hope that we continue to build on President Obama’s efforts to end the failed embargo, lift the travel ban and normalize relations between our two countries,” Lee said.

Lee is a committee member of the Congressional Working Group.
