FLINT, Mich. (AP) – A Michigan congressman has introduced a bipartisan resolution saying Iran should immediately release jailed ex-Marine Amir Hekmati and “all detained Americans” and provide information on those who’ve “disappeared within its borders.”
Democratic U.S. Rep. Dan Kildee said Thursday that Republican Raul Labrador of Idaho and Democrats Jared Huffman of California and Ted Deutsch of Florida are co-sponsoring the resolution.
Kildee says in a statement that Iran “cannot be taken seriously as a member of the global community” if it keeps holding Hekmati and other “innocent Americans.”
Kildee’s district includes the Flint area, where Hekmati’s family lives.
Hekmati was arrested in 2011 while visiting relatives in Iran and is serving a 10-year prison sentence. Kildee and TV personality Montel Williams plan a 9:30 a.m. Washington news conference on the case.
