Condition upgraded for fan hit by Oakland A’s bat

BOSTON (KRON/AP) – The woman hospitalized after being hit by a broken Oakland A’s bat is recovering, as her family said on Monday that her condition is improving.

44-year-old Tonya Carpenter suffered what police initially said were life-threatening injuries during Friday night’s game at Fenway Park between the Boston Red Sox and the A’s.

The family of Carpenter issued a statement Monday that said: “Tonya is responsive, and her condition has been upgraded from serious to fair.”

Carpenter was struck in the head in the second inning when the bat of Oakland’s Brett Lawrie broke and sailed into the seats along the third-base line when he hit a ground ball.

She is being treated at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, where her condition was listed as serious on Saturday and Sunday.
