OAKLAND (KRON) — The 21-year-old son of an Oakland City Councilwoman Lynette Gibson McElhaney was remembered Monday night at a small private event in West Oakland.
Victor McElhaney was shot and killed sunday less than a mile from the University of Southern California. — the school that Victor attended and where he studied music.
Police say that victor was walking down the street just after midnight Sunday.
It appears that he was the victim of an attempted robbery when a group approached him and shot him. Angela Wellman says Victor used to call her his ‘music mom.’
“I’m up and down and very much in shock. Every now and then it hits me, that this beautiful spirit was taken from us,” Wellman said.
She’s known him since he was 11. Sunday she received a call from his dad about the shooting.
“That was a very difficult moment as you can imagine.”
Victor played the drums and went from a student at the Oakland Public Conservatory of music to a mentor there. In fact even those at USC recognized his talent.
“His drum instructor at USC said that by the time Victor got to them as a junior, he was already playing at a professional level,” Wellman said.
In a statement Councilwoman McElhaney said, “I miss my baby. Please keep me, my family, and all of my son’s friends in your thoughts and prayers.”
