LAKE COUNTY (KRON) — The arson suspect accused of starting the Clayton Fire has been charged with 19 counts of arson and has a bail set for $5 million.

40-year-old Damin Pashilk was arraigned Wednesday afternoon in Lake County. Pashilk did not enter a plea in court.

“We believe he has acted alone,” a prosecutor in the case said.

Prosecutors say they don’t suspect Pashilk started the Valley Fire last year, but they did say they don’t know if he started the Jerusalem Fire.

“If he is responsible for these, we have to make sure that he deserves a right to a fair trial,” said Lake County Sheriff Brian Martin.

Police are not releasing many details about the case because the Clayton Fire is still under investigation.

Officers say they do have strong evidence against Pashilk for allegedly starting the Clayton Fire.

The fire has now burned nearly 4,000 acres and is 50 percent contained.
