A possible jumper who prompted authorities to close all southbound lanes on the Benicia Bridge has been detained.
Shortly before 7:43 p.m. officers received a report of a man threatening to jump off the bridge.
California Highway Patrol officers were able to make contact with the man and he is in custody.
Earlier reports suggested the man had an explosive device and authorities are working to determine if it exists.
An explosive device team has been called to the scene to declare whether it’s safe to open the southbound portion of the bridge.

Regarding Benicia Bridge closure: expect severe traffic delays, take alternate routes, as there’s no known opening of the s/b side of the bridge. Our main concern is public safety. Our Public Information Officer will be on scene for an update on the situation between 9:30 – 10pm.— CHP – Contra Costa (@320PIO) April 6, 2019
