As the rain starts to taper off, drivers are feeling the need to return to their old habits.

However, California Highway Patrol says the roads are still wet so now is not the time.

“This is one of the worst times because the rain has stopped or is slowing down and people think they can start driving as fast as they want but it’s not going to work out too well,” Officer Sean Wilkenfeld said.

KRON4’s Dan Kerman got to tag along with CHP officers as they monitored the roads and he saw a few good examples of what not to do while driving on slick highways.

One man slammed into the rear of another vehicle that had slowed down and destroyed the front of his car.

Luckily the airbags deployed and no one was injured but CHP says it’s a good reminder to slow down and allow extra stopping distance between you and the car ahead during and after a storm.

“We want to remind people to turn their headlights on not just so you can see, but so you can be seen by other drivers, on the freeway,” Officer Wilkenfeld said. “There’s a spray that can be kicked up by rear tires, and if your lights are on everyone can see you as well.
