DISCOVERY BAY (KRON) — Highway 4 was closed in both directions on Wednesday in Discovery Bay after a police chase from Oroville, the California Highway Patrol said.

The chase started when CHP officers spotted a wanted suspect considered “potentially” armed and dangerous in Oroville.

At around 12:24 p.m., officers chased the driver of a Dodge Magnum that was driving recklessly. Officers tried to stop the Dodge, but it sped away.

The chase continued south on Interstate 5 toward Lodi.

The pursuit kept going into the Stockton area, so CHP Stockton officers took over.

CHP officers tried three times to stop the Dodge with spike strips but were unsuccessful.

The car exited at Charter Way and kept going west on Highway 4.

“As a result of the high speeds and passing over double yellow lines, the ground units stopped pursuing the Dodge to preserve public safety. The CHP airplane continued to monitor the Dodge and give officers updates,” officers said.

The chase ended in Discovery Bay on Highway 4 by the Old River Bridge. Officers closed off the bridge before the suspect got there.

The suspect stopped his car on the shoulder and jumped in the river, Officer Brandon Correia said.

CHP officers were awaiting proper equipment and help to go out in the water and arrest him.

The suspect evaded officers by swimming under the boat and taunting officers from the water, officers said.

About 1 hour later, deputies took the suspect into custody. He has been identified as 46-year-old Gregory Alan Holloway.

Holloway was medically cleared and was booked into the San Joaquin County Jail for felony evading and resisting arrest.

No other injuries were reported.

Highway 4 reopened at around 5 p.m.WHAT OTHERS ARE CLICKING ON:
