SOLEDAD, Calif. (AP) – Officials say a wildfire burning in a rural and largely agricultural section of California’s Central Coast is now 50 percent contained.
There are no reports of any injuries or any homes or other structures being threatened.
The fire charred more than six square miles before its growth was stopped.
State fire spokesman Daniel Berlant says Monday that the growth slowed after sundown Sunday.
It broke out at about 3:30 p.m. Sunday and had burned just 800 acres in its first two hours but then surged to nearly 4,000 acres amid strong winds.
The fire is burning near Soledad in Monterey County between the Salinas River and Pinnacles National Park.
Two air tankers and a helicopter were helping 200 firefighters take on the blaze.
