Police in Newark are looking for a suspect who slammed into a parked car, and then took off.

This happened early on Thursday morning, and it was all on caught on a surveillance camera.

On Thursday, KRON4 spoke to the owner of the car.

It’s not totaled, but it’s not far off from that. The owner took it into the shop on Thursday morning for repair.

He had just brought it home from the shop on Wednesday night, so you can imagine his reaction when he walked out to his wrecked car on Thursday morning.

In the video, you see flashing lights approach the Dodge Camaro with a stripe on the front. Then, the suspect’s vehicle slammed head-on into the car.

The suspect stopped. It looks like he might get out of the car. He even opens the door, but then looks around, doesn’t see anyone, and then takes off.

What the suspect didn’t know is that there is a surveillance camera right in front of him which belongs to the victim’s neighbor. The owner of the car, John Byrne, happens to be a longtime firefighter for Cal Fire on the Peninsula.

He was getting ready for work when he discovered he had to find an alternate way to get there.

And he says he was able to borrow his dad’s car for Thursday but will need to get a rental since sometimes he is on-call.

He is on duty Thursday evening, so KRON4 talked to his dad who discovered the wreck.

“My son was laying here on the couch, and I went out to get the paper,” Dan Byrne said. “Then, I looked over at his car which was in front of my neighbor’s house, and I just saw it was smashed and sticking out in the street a little bit went back inside, and I said, ‘John, got some bad news for you. Better go take a look,’ so he went running out. He says, ‘Yeah, I just got it fix and out of the shop, and then you have to bring it right back.”

Newark police did arrive on-scene on Thursday morning collecting evidence.

A piece of what appears to be the suspect’s license plate was found on the ground. It says, “All ima” and it cuts off. The family says their neighbors and friends and family on social media have been very supportive, and it’s hard to know the make of the suspect’s car for sure.

But a lot of people think it may be a mid-2000’s, Mercury Sable.

If you have any information about this incident, you can call Newark police.
