KINGSTON, Ontario (KRON) — Many people usually just ignore the warnings about illegal downloads, but one Canadian grandmother is being charged for illegally downloading a game she says she had never heard of.

Eighty-six-year-old Christine McMillan received two notices saying that she could have to pay up to $5,000.

It is likely that a hacker used McMillan’s IP address to download the game.

“I just find that it is quite shocking that somebody can threaten you over the internet and tell you that you have to click on something to make a payment, but they don’t tell you how much the payment is, but if you don’t do it you’re going to have to be liable for up to $5,000,” McMillan said.

Tens of thousands of Canadians may have received notices to pay up, whether they are guilty or not.

Critics said the law needs to be revamped so Canadians understand their rights.
