CAMPBELL (KRON)—Campbell police are using GPS tracking technology to deter package thefts with the holidays quickly approaching.

Package thefts have increased since online shopping has gained popularity, according to the department.

Even those who are tracking the shipment don’t know exactly when the driver will drop off their package, so there is always a chance someone could steal their package.

The department is teaming up with Campbell residents to place “bait packages” containing GPS trackers at homes and businesses throughout the city. When a package is stolen, an alert will go directly to police officers and a suspect can easily be apprehended.

The packages will look no different than any other package.

To prevent your packages from being stolen, you can request your package to be received where someone is present or ask the company to hold the package at its closest pick-up facility.
