Camp Fire death toll hits 77 with containment at 65 percent

The death toll in the massive Camp Fire burning in Butte County has increased to 77 with containment at 65 percent, officials said on Sunday night.

Butte County Sheriff Officer Korey Honea said emergency responders have made progress in finding people who had been reported missing in the wildfire.


It was reported that 1,276 were still missing, but on Sunday night that number decreased by 283. 

The list of unaccounted for now stands at 993. 

Authorities stressed that many of the people on the list may be safe and unaware they have been reported missing.

The wildfire has destroyed 14,003 structures which mostly includes single family residences.
