A Caltrans worker at the scene of three motorcycle accidents this morning in Pinole says a newly paved road may be responsible.

Around 6:00 a.m. two motorcyclists spun out near the Pinole Valley Road exit on westbound I-80, where Caltrans had just wrapped up overnight construction.

Around 8:00 a.m., a third motorcyclist crash in the same location.

A Caltrans worker at the site tells KRON4 the newly paved lanes of the interstate are uneven with the older lanes, creating a dip in the road.

This may be the reason why the three motorcyclists all crashed in the same area, according to this worker.

KRON4 reached out to Caltrans officials, who did not confirm this information. The officials say they are looking into this morning’s incidents before giving a definitive response.

However, Caltrans is working on fixing the uneven lanes.

The roadwork was supposed to end at 4:30 a.m., but instead lasted until about 6:00 a.m. This, combined with the three crashes, caused major delays during the morning commute. Traffic was jammed for hours from Hercules back to Vallejo. As of 10:00 a.m., traffic was still backed up from Crockett.

The overnight construction is expected to continue weeknights from 8:30 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. through November.
