Caltrain working to decrease the number of suicides

PALO ALTO (KRON) — Over the last two years, Palo Alto, along with Mountain View and Atherton lead the way in Caltrain related deaths.

Many of these deaths are suicides, and now the City of Palo Alto is working with Caltrain to bring those numbers down by implementing a new program to install cameras along the tracks.

The cameras would be installed near the meadow Avenue crossing, and would look up and down the tracks about a mile. If the cameras detect someone, 911 would be called and they in turn will alert Caltrain and the train’s conductor.

Caltrain is also clearing shrubs, adding fencing, and using crisis intervention transit police to bring down the number of deaths.
