A woman plunged to her death after losing her footing while trying to take a photo at a waterfall near Lake Tahoe on Friday, according to North Tahoe Fire Protection District.
Officials said 35-year-old Dina Espinosa, of the Bay Area, was killed when she slipped while reaching for a branch and was swept away in the very fast moving waters over the waterfall.
It happened at Eagle Falls, just above Vikingsholm in Emerald Bay.
Resources were immediately deployed to the area. Espinosa was found dead.
Fire district spokeswoman Erin Holland said that witnesses reported the young woman was too close to the edge.
There was no guardrail blocking access to the area.
In a Facebook post, officials wrote: “This is a sad reminder to be cautious when taking selfies and other photos in dangerous areas. Don’t underestimate the power of waterfalls, rivers, and cold water temperatures.”
Holland says very cold water feeding the waterfall is moving extremely fast because of snowmelt from record snowfall in the surrounding Sierra Nevada mountains.
