LAKEWOOD, Calif. (AP) — A Southern California suspected of dumping a dog in the gutter and shooting it to death has been arrested after leading officers on a car chase, authorities said Saturday.
Los Angeles County Sheriff’s investigators had been searching for Shane Dubyak, 23, of Lakewood since a witness reported seeing a man get out of a car in an industrial area of La Mirada, about 16 miles southwest of Los Angeles, on Jan. 5 and placing a dog in the gutter and firing two gunshots.
Authorities said after the man left, the witness went to the gutter and found the dog which died from gunshot wounds.
Aided by tips and surveillance video of the incident, detectives identified the car and suspect who was spotted Friday as he was driving in the city of Artesia, a statement from the sheriff’s department said.
Detectives tried to pull him over, but Dubyak refused and led them on a chase during which he threw a firearm from his car. He got out of the vehicle in the city of Cerritos and tried to run away before being captured, the statement said.
Dubyak was taken into custody and booked for investigation of cruelty to animals, evading arrest and being an ex-felon in possession of a firearm. He was being held on $75,000 bail.
