The gas tax is now the hottest political football now that the California Republican candidate for governor has made it a cornerstone of this election.
Republican candidate John Cox wants to repeal the tax and supports a November ballot measure to do it.
State Building and Construction Trades Council President Robbie Hunter has a different idea.
“This fund will improve the quality of Californians,” Hunter said.
On Cox’s side is former San Diego Councilman Carl DeMaio
“Shame on the politicians for raising this tax,” DeMaio said.
There are opposing views on the gas tax fight–those wanting to keep SB1 and those wanting to repeal the gas tax that was put in place last November.
California State Association of Counties Executive Director Graham Knaus supports the gas tax.
“What’s being proposed is a dangerous scheme that would threaten the safety of those roads,” Knaus said.
Knaus and his group say a repeal would eliminate more than 5,000 transportation projects currently underway, such as fixing potholes, upgrading bridges, and easing traffic congestion.
On the other side is the Republican candidate for governor John Cox. He is helping support the efforts to repeal the gas tax.
He says the state has wasted money in the past.
“We’re going to build a lot of roads, but we’re not going to do it by raising taxes,” Cox said. “We’re going to start using our money efficiently.”
Their next step is getting the repeal measure on the ballot.
They believe they have the votes to get it passed.
