Quick-thinking deputies save life of unconscious baby in Southern California

Two Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies are being credited with saving a baby’s life.

It all started Monday night when officers pulled over a car that was driving erratically.

Officials say the driver jumped out of the car, holding a 9-month-old who was not breathing.

Capt. Richard Harpham is speaking about this video.

It shows deputy Tyler Milton cradling a baby during a desperate rush to save the little boy’s life.

“Certainly when you have a 9-month-old who’s not breathing, everyone jumps into action,” Capt. Harpham said.

Just about 10 minutes earlier near Highway 91 in Bellflower, Deputy Milton had stopped the baby’s frantic parents for driving erratically.

They were looking for the hospital.

He knew there was no time to waste.

“Deputy Milton sprung into action, grabbed the 9-month-old and summoned help from help from other vehicles,” Capt. Harpham said.

“Move it! Move it!” You can hear the urgency in that person’s voice as deputies rushed towards Long Beach Memorial with sirens blaring. In the passenger seat of one patrol car, Deputy Milton held the lifeless baby on his lap and did CPR.

The baby’s mother was in back with another deputy, Alyssa Farrington, behind the wheel

“They got on the radio, ‘Got a hold other units,'” Capt. Harpham said. “They blocked intersections all the way down.”

Long Beach police immediately sealed off streets too. Minutes later, that dramatic video was captured.

Deputy Milton jumped out of the car with the baby in his arms.

Only now, thanks to him and his fellow deputies, the little boy was again breathing.

“Was able to get the baby breathing again,” Capt. Harpham said. “What a heroic life-saving action.”

Capt. Harpham says as a father and grandfather himself, he couldn’t be prouder of his deputies.

“I just can’t thank them enough, and I think we should all thank them for their lifesaving, heroic actions,” Capt. Harpham said.

The sheriff’s department said the baby is in the hospital in stable condition.
