SACRAMENTO (KRON) — The Sacramento Police Department released body camera footage Friday night showing the moments before and after a gunman shot and killed a rookie police officer during a domestic violence call earlier this week.
Sacramento Police Chief Daniel Hahn called Wednesday a “horrific day” for the city and police department.
Hahn said his department lost an “amazing person and bright light,” as he described the events that took place Wednesday night.
Hahn said Officer Tara O’Sullivan, 26, was dedicated to helping people.
“She truly was doing what she loved and was very dedicated to helping people,” the police chief said.
Hahn said O’Sullivan wanted to be an officer for a long time.
“I’ve known her since before we hired her,” Hahn said. “I’ve never seen her not smile.”
Body camera footage released Friday night shows another officer entering the property near the 200 block of Redwood Avenue in Sacramento just moments before shots were fired.
Several rounds of gunfire can be heard early on in the video.
Police called the deadly shooting an “ambush-style attack”
Chief Daniel Hahn said the suspect was intent on harming more people during the shooting.
Hahn went on to say other officers on scene performed “admirably,” emphasizing that no other police officers were killed during the standoff.
According to police department spokesman Sgt. Vance Chandler, O’Sullivan was struck by multiple rifle rounds.
He called at least one of the wounds “non-survivable.”
The police spokesman said the suspect was armed with a total of four weapons during the ambush, a handgun, shot gun and two rifles, all found inside the home where the shooting occurred.
Chandler said Sacramento police officers fired 100 rounds toward the suspect during the standoff.
O’Sullivan was helping a woman gather belongings from a North Sacramento home when she was shot.
The suspect was identified by police as Adel Ramos.
Ramos surrendered to police overnight after an 8-hour standoff with officers.
Prior to serving in the Sacramento Police Department, O’Sullivan attended College Park High School and Diablo Valley College, both in Pleasant Hill.
Flags were flown at half-staff at the Pleasant Hill Police Department after the officer’s death.
