STOCKTON, Calif. (KTXL) — Family, friends and thousands of fellow law enforcement officers from across the country traveled with heavy hearts to Stockton to celebrate the life of Officer Jimmy Inn.

“My heart is broken in two. No words to describe the pain,” Inn’s father, Phaly Inn, said.

Jimmy Inn was the son of a Cambodian refugee who achieved his American dream of being a loving husband, devoted father and a dedicated police officer, even serving on the department’s color guard.

“You wore the badge and the uniform with such honor and respect for what it represented to you and to the community,” friend and former partner Carlo Fagan said.

Inn is survived by his wife, Tela, who is also a Stockton police officer, their 7-month-old son, his 12-year-old stepdaughter and 14-year-old stepson.

“The short five years that I had with him, he’s taught me more than I could ever learn in a lifetime. Patience, kindness,” Tela Inn said.

Inn was killed in the line of duty responding to a domestic violence call involving a child on La Cresta Way last week.

Those who knew him said his death was not just a loss for his family and friends, but for the community he loved to serve.

“He gave, and he gave, and he gave, and he gave and even in his last breath, he was giving,” Tela Inn said.

The service and tributes that followed were an honor fit for the hero he was described as being.

“He was an asset to Stockton PD, the face of what a law enforcement officer should be,” friend and former partner Anthony Taylor said.

Loved ones said Inn leaves behind a legacy of laughter, love and light.

“Jimmy Inn is seared into our souls,” Chaplain Jesse Kenyon said. “We will never forget his impact.”

Officer Pancho Freer, who also spoke, was Inn’s partner. He shot and killed the man who killed Inn. Freer was introduced by Inn’s wife:

“Not everybody can run towards gunfire, not even some police officers when it comes down to it — this man did. While bullets were flying past him, he was running toward my husband. I can never repay him for the bravery he showed and the love that he showed for my husband that day.”
