Covered California health insurance open enrollment kicks off Monday

Covered California open enrollment kicked off on Monday.

This year, it’s being rebranded as the “sign-on period.”

Individuals can purchase health insurance that will go into effect Jan. 1 through Dec. 15.

It’s the first year that there is no tax penalty for opting to not have health insurance.

That means consumers can expect premiums to go up about 9 percent this year.

The final deadline to enroll has also been cut short by two weeks.

It is now Jan. 15 for coverage that would begin in February.
