LAGUNA BEACH, Calif. (AP) – Authorities say a 15-year-old boy had his arm nearly severed when a boulder fell on him at a Southern California beach.
The teen was injured Wednesday afternoon as he and a friend walked below a cliff in Emerald Bay, near Laguna Beach.
Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Tony Bommarito says a boulder the size of a large cooler struck the boy, nearly severing his right arm above the elbow.
Bommarito says the boy’s leg also was lodged under the boulder.
He says the teenager was trapped for 40 minutes before rescuers using heavy-lift airbags and brute strength managed to push the rock off of him.
The boy was taken by helicopter to a hospital.
There’s no immediate word on his condition.
