CALIFORNIA (KRON) — As a destructive fire burns Paris’ Notre Dame Cathedral, California lawmakers and Bay Area leaders are showing solidarity with the “City of Lights.”
Mayor London Breed showed support to San Francisco’s sister city via Twitter Monday afternoon, saying her city is thinking of Paris and the historic cathedral.
As we watch the devastation at Notre Dame Cathedral, San Francisco’s thoughts are with the people of Paris, our Sister City, and those who continue to battle the flames.— London Breed (@LondonBreed) April 15, 2019
San Francisco and Paris became ‘sister cities’ in 1997, according to the San Francisco Office of Economic and Development. The two cities are connected by their art and cultural and are widely considered ‘two of the most beautiful cities on earth.’
Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-San Francisco) also showed support to Paris, telling Parisians the U.S. stands with them.
.@NotreDameParis has stood as a beating heart of religion & culture for centuries, inspiring all who have visited her. The footage of today’s fire is nothing short of heartbreaking. To the people of Paris & France: know that America stands with you.— Nancy Pelosi (@SpeakerPelosi) April 15, 2019
San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo called the fire a “heartbreaking sight.”
A heartbreaking sight at #NotreDame today, as the sun set over Paris. My thoughts and prayers are with Mayor @Anne_Hidalgo and all Parisians as they mourn tonight.
Paris, nous sommes avec vous.— Sam Liccardo (@sliccardo) April 15, 2019
Construction was underway at the cathedral when the fire began.
“Everything is burning, nothing will remain from the frame,” Notre Dame spokesman Andre Finot told French media Monday.
The cathedral, built in the 12th century, is considered one of the most famous tourist attractions in the world.
